A Festive Cinco De Mayo For Jackson County!
A Report on TAC’s First Grand Gala in Support of The Edna Theatre Project
May 5th, 2023 will go down as a fun and memorable day in the lives of the over 250 area residents who attended the Texana Arts Council’s first annual gala at the Evermore Event Center outside Edna. The spirited event offered a festive evening and raised a lot of money to support the eventual restoration of the historic Edna Theatre. The night celebrated the color and vitality of Hispanic culture and history, all perfectly accentuated by great food, music and dance.
The evening began with an authentic mariachi recital by one of the area’s finest mariachi bands, blending songs, brasses and strings in perfect harmony to set the stage for the evening’s events. Victoria’s Our Lady of Sorrows Ballet Folklorico, the state’s oldest continuing folklorico dance group followed, with their many performers young and old mesmerizing attendants with intriguing Mexican folk-dance routines performed in full and colorful regalia. Open pitchers of margaritas, tequila tastings and a delectable meal of traditional Mexican cuisine catered by Cicada Restaurant and Catering topped off the evening’s many pleasantries.
Along the way, a lively room of guests briskly pursued a full and impressive array of generously donated local specialties offered at the silent auction tables. Bidders were also active during the evening’s live auction event, which featured yet another half-dozen specially curated packages graciously donated to the cause by local businesses and friends of the theatre. The “big ticket” items ranged from guided hunts to ocean vacations and everything in between. Cisco Marek did the honors as guest auctioneer and generated a lot of crowd enthusiasm.
The evening also provided the backdrop for the George Strait-Chris Stapleton raffle drawing, another performing arts fund raiser orchestrated by the local Arts Council, underwritten with the aid of several generous local sponsors. After a last call for ticket purchases, the 286 ticket stubs were rolled, a sole number drawn, and a winner declared. The lucky number was that of Charles Fenner, who not only set the record for the number of raffle ticket purchased, but benevolently returned the $1000 travel funds to the Council and provided the two prize concert tickets for resale in the live auction festivities, all of which garnered yet another $3200 in proceeds for the Theatre project!
All-in-all, the Council’s Cinco De Mayo Celebration offered a splendid evening for all who attended and represented a successful fund-raising affair for the theatre project, netting a sum of over $60,000 for the theatre initiative. TAC President Shelley Srp expressed the sentiments of the entire TAC Board in her comments extending thanks to all who came and contributed to the evenings event through their presence, their gifts, donations, sponsorships, acquisitions and on-going well wishes and support!
As can be seen from the sample of photographs included, a good time was had by ALL! The Texana Arts Council wishes to thank all who attended, the many volunteers who pitched in to make this first formal event a success, and convey again a special thanks to all event, auction and raffle sponsors, all of whom are recognized on our donors website at www.ednatheatre.com.
